Barrington Pottery Hand-Thrown Bread Pancheons

Crafted by hand at Barrington Pottery using traditional wheel-throwing techniques, our Bread Pancheons celebrate the enduring forms and practical beauty of historic farmhouse pottery. Each bowl is individually thrown by skilled potter Paul Jessop preserving the character, subtle variations, and craftsmanship that have defined working pottery for generations.

For centuries, large earthenware bowls such as these were an essential feature of farmhouse kitchens throughout Britain and Europe. Known as Bread Pancheons, they were used for mixing, kneading, and proving bread dough, their broad open form providing the perfect vessel for everyday baking. The natural thermal properties of pottery helped maintain an even temperature, creating ideal conditions for bread making long before modern conveniences existed.

These versatile vessels were also commonly used as cream pans or creamers, where fresh milk was left to stand so that the cream could naturally rise to the surface before being skimmed. In rural households, a single pancheon might serve many purposes throughout the day, reflecting the practical values of traditional country living.

Similar forms can be found across France, where they are known as Tians—a name derived from the Provençal language. The French Tian has long been valued for preparing food, mixing ingredients, and serving rustic family meals, sharing a common heritage with the humble British bread pancheon.

At Barrington Pottery, we continue these traditions using time-honoured methods and durable earthenware clays. Every bowl is carefully shaped, glazed, and fired to create a piece that is both functional and beautiful. Whether used for baking, serving, or simply displayed as a reminder of a slower, more connected way of life, each pancheon embodies the craftsmanship, utility, and authenticity that have made traditional pottery an enduring part of farmhouse kitchens for centuries.
